Do the Rhynchocentrum and Neofinetia like to be potted in sphag? Is Neofinetia a cool grower?
I really like your Rhynco-vanda Sri Siam -Rhy. gigantea, red something like that will be one of my first purchases when I get my new orchidarium running; it's my wife's favorite shape for sure
I'm jealous of those with Orchid shows nearby! The New York Orchid show was cancelled, just my luck (as we just moved here), first time in ~20 years it was cancelled...

Neofinetia falcata has been potted in sphrag in the japanese way forever. It's all about having the air inside
Potting Methods of Traditional Pot Plants (thanks Gin! )
I just put a little sphrag moss in the vanda baskets to keep the humidity up, since I don't want to pot them. Because it gets so cold in Ontario, we have to turn the heat up in the house, and humidity goes out the window.
I really like my Rhynco-vanda Sri Siam -Rhy. gigantea, red too I walked into the show and saw it on display and went I love the color of it. I was at the show in maybe the first half hour, and the vendor only had 2 left! Apparently he'd sold most of them while he was setting up the night before! Can we say Meant To Be?!?
The Rochester NY show's been cancelled? That sucks... I was thinking of crossing the border for it

shams- what is the humidity in your house in the winter?
I live in Montreal, and my humidity is 30% right now!!! ughghhh the cold weather haha
I want to buy a vanda, but I am worried that the humidity is too low! also, if the roots are misted twice a day, will that fix the problem?

If you want to start growing Vandas, go for the genuine BLUE types like coerulea and hybrids from it. Will handle cooler conditions and put the plant in a large plastic pot with large, good quality bark. The bark will hold moisture around the roots without staying too wet. I grow mine this way and have for years with great success. I'll post a pic or 2 for you.

I think typically, the humidity inside the house is about 40% I did have a humidifier going toget it up to 50%, but it was making Robert's Delight cold, and it bud blasted, so I have to find a new place for the humidifer.
Misting twice a day really helps. I think, now that I have so many plants, the humidity has gone up, because they are all hanging off of each other The Vandas also like to be dunked in water every couple of days (mine have an hour bath in fertilizer water. I've taken all the moss out, to give roots a breather for the time being.
Roy is also right about pots. The growers here recommend a very large clay pot you can sit the whole plant in with a porous mix of perlite or bark, and put a bit of moss on top. This has the benefit of holding in more moisture, and they said you only have to water once a week this way.
Depends on what type of person you are is the way you can try it. If you're like me and like to fuss over plants every day (I can't wait for spring ) and like seeing the roots all over the place, you can hang and mist them. If you like to stand back for a bit and work on other things, pot them
So long as the house doesn't get below 15 Celcius, you should be ok.I would LOVE to get a Vanda coerulea, because it's supposed to be cooler, but haven't seen it here yet. I guess i'll have to settle for hybrids... not that I mind

thanks for the tips! What I like about these is that they are hard to overwater if they arent in any potting mix! I think I will try one, and mist it twice a day, and give it a "bath" as you say, every week
One of my phals has 6 long aerial roots and they get misted twice a day, and are nice and plump and healthy

ROOT EXPLOSION!
Haven't posted in a while, and forgot to write about the roots that are popping out on Princess Mikasa and Ken Kone.
Princess Mikasa is popping a stogie out from the main plant. It's kind of indecent
Ken Kone is popping about 4 or 5 new roots from the fat root that was on it.
