(Phal. pulcherrima x V. miniata)
This is a beautiful clone that was registered in 1971 from the University of Hawaii. I asked my Manhattan orchid collector where she got it: it was cloned by a grower in Florida in the late 60’s she said. It is well suited for windowsill culture. In the late 1950s and 1960s quite a number of breeders tried crossing Phals with Vandas. A couple of people I know had some bad experience with Vandaenopsis that was the main reason I was skeptical in taking care of one. But I am very intrigued by the color of the flowers and how they look dainty but robust. This plant started opening its blooms a month ago and it is just now that I took a photo and posted it. The tip of the spike is still producing blooms.
I had this two years ago as a three year old seedling. I give it Phalaenopsis culture but a slight brighter light on the southwest window hanging in a 4-inch basket in Phalaenopsis mix. I water it once a week but doused under a sink for a couple of minutes until its dripping wet. It loves the New York humidity in summers. I am quite surprised that this orchid plant is not high maintenance at all.
A true Vandaenopsis is hard to find that’s why I grabbed this plant immediately as soon as I saw it.
