Aerides -> Ascocentrum -> Vanda rubescens Male
Default Aerides -> Ascocentrum -> Vanda rubescens

Purchased as Aerides rubescens, it was reclassified as an Ascocentrum, so I guess it is considered a Vanda today. It is a sib cross, which bloomed first time in Nov/Dec 2014.

The photos I took then were not in focus. This year it has 4 spikes, including a terminal spike, but it has started a basal keiki, so the plant is OK.

It is a slender plant, growing in a 3.1/2" net pot. I have a seedpod (x Asctm christensonianum) in the lab, and should get the flasks this summer.

Update: It received a provisional AM/AOS today (80 pts). They just need to verify which genus it belongs to now.

Kew currently accepts Aerides rubescens, though it previously accepted Ascocentrum rubescens. It appears it was not included in the transfer to Vanda. I don't know if that was by choice or by omission. Either way, it would have automatically reverted to Aerides once it could no longer be Ascocentrum, at least until someone publishes a new treatment. Nothing can be Ascocentrum if there is no Ascocentrum miniatum, the type species.

There are no registered hybrids for this species. I hope that cross gives some interesting results. And congrats on the award on this rarely seen species.

Thanks for this update. The AOS judges were surprised that this species had no previous awards (outside of an initial CHM), but they googled photos and decided that this clone had better coloration than the average plant.

I found the plant on Ebay in January 2014, sold by B&D Orchids from FL. The label indicates that it is a sib cross, and that one of the parents was a dark flower.

The flowers are small, but there are a lot of them and the curved upright spikes are different from any other Aerides or Ascocentrum I can think of. I plan to try a few more crosses (I have abt a dozen other small Vandaceous in bloom or big bud).
