Default Vanda coerulea new growth

Got this Vanda coerulea in bloom last June 2013 and it has been a struggle. But I like how it enjoys our mild winters, although I made the mistake last Dec of hiding it in my growcamp, it got those brownish spots. Have moved it back near the fountain spot it used to hang. It has lost some lower leaves during winter to early Spring, but I see new root nubbins coming about, and leaf color is improving. Thankfully our temps this late April to May has been cooler than usual.

I see new growth along the stem...more new roots? or spike??

Looks like a new root, and it's on the front which also indicates that. Glad your vanda is doing better and growing roots! Mine has no spike yet either. I am actually thinking mine likes lower light than my others it actually has a couple spots i think I burned it.

Its still a Vanda even if it is a coerulea....it can withstand cooler temps than most vandacious plants=but it doesn't mean you have to give it cool conditions....it likes warmth and bright light....the cold spots is apparent on the leaves. Gradually give it bright sun(not direct sun) this summer and high humidity....the roots are pencil thick that means it is doing its job....it even gave you a brand new root.

New roots are forming, so the plant is happy right now. I'm sure the winters are not that cold down there. I find the species very temperature tolerant... Well, where I live in the pacific northwest. Love the species.

Warmth and bright light is not my problem here actually, got a nice canopy of city trees here which my other orchids also enjoy..more of our humidity deficiency is the problem. Really bad here, drought conditions and all. I only grew this one Vanda since it will not mind being outdoors even during our winter. But Mother Nature is nice this year somehow, we got cooler than usual temps, normally we are in the sizzling side already of 90F and higher. I am just going to step up my misting then for now. During summer I do dunk this one in water, just way too hot and dry here.

I didn't know you are in San Juaquin County of California....I thought you were farther north in Canada I was confused hence assuming you are in a colder front.

Just an update on my Vanda coerulea. I have moved it under our garden umbrella, and have read endlessly about that vase culture style of growing it. I kind of borrowed the style but still keeping it outdoors under our umbrella. I figured outdoors, it will continue to have good cross breeze than indoors and it is already used to our temperature extremes. The only difference I do is I keep about an inch or so of water below, but the plant is still suspended above it, the roots not touching the water. So far I have only dunked it once, and these past few days, I just keep on spray misting the roots/entire plant, whenever I go out. It is so hot and dry here right now, heat wave galore!

The new growth is indeed a happy fat root! woohoo! And there was a marked improvement on its growth, finally making a new leaf as well! I am just happy with the new growth I see! So it seems come summer time, I should further shade the poor thing under our garden umbrella. It is enduring quite well our heat wave, normally I just see this one so tight up with its leaves and hardly any new roots, this time around, it is growing better!
