Hi Tarev, it's always exciting to see the root growing. So far no new roots coming out my vanda's stem but there are a few active root tips branching out. Do you keep your vanda coerulea outdoors all winter? I would imagine San Juaquin is colder in winter than the Bay Area, correct? Also, because our weather is complete opposite of their natural habitat (i.e. raining in winter), do you shelter your vanda from the rain?

Hi Jackie,

Last year, when we had that quirky late Fall rainy conditions, I was worried with the rain, so I sheltered it in my growcamp. I think it was not good, seemed to have developed those fungal spots on the leaves. In previous years, I just let it out hanging, seems better that way, taught me a lesson, just let it out whatever season when it rains, since our Cali conditions is way too mild winter wise and so rain deficient most of the time on other seasons anyways.

It is colder here indeed during winter, but this vanda coerulea I purposely bought for that reason, the idea that I can leave it out even during winter. I just panicked last year when we had those late Fall rains. Have seen photos of the plant in some areas where it is loaded in snow, and knowing it grows in the Himalayas, it should adapt in our mild winters.

It has endured our 21F the year before last, so it does take the cold temps very well.
