Default Sarcochilus hartmannii in bloom

Species from eastern Australia

One of my outside orchids - this has been an easy grower and bloomer for me. Compact size (only about 4" tall, 9" across at this point). Cute, dainty (about .75"), sweetly fragrant blooms.

Potted in coconut husk chips mix, which is kept lightly moist. Moderate sun (mine receives some morning sun).

All in all, a completely impulsive buy I am very happy I made

Thanks for looking

Love the plant growth habit and the flowers too. Just saw my first one of these in the local greenhouse last week. Some how I managed not to buy it. But I'm going back tomorrow....

It was seldom seen and grown here. Some of my friends have ever introduced these plants into our country, but they did not grow well.

I'm with Paul, I have never got mine to bloom either. I get what I think is a spike and then it dries up. Maybe I have been keeping it too dry. Yours is lovey .

I just got a piece of this from a fellow OB friend. I hope to see mine looking like yours one day.

Thanks everyone!

I was under the impression that these want some cool temps to bloom, but can't remember positively. Mine starts spikes early in winter, so maybe some cooerl night temps in autumn ?

As for spikes drying out early - yes, it may be too dry ? I have read they should be kept moist once new growth starts until after blooming. And that they can be a bit drier in summer (Mine may get *just* dry in-between waterings in summer, but I don't allow it to remain dry) - overall, I don't think they want to be dry.

I'm definitely on the look-out for more of this genus!
