Hey orchid boarders, I came across this the other day on the Internet whilst searching trichogglottis brachiata, and I'm curious as to why they've fitted those onto the roots... Anyone ever tried this? Or know what it is?? thanks, Jack

Those tubes are used by florists to keep cut flowers fresh in flower arrangements. I've not seen them used with orchids before. Not sure this is a good technique long-term.

maybe used during the moving from a greenhouse to another if itneeds to much time, to avoid dried and stop-growing tip root.

Hi,
I have to agree with Orchid Whisperer: florists call them hydrotubes or water picks- they're used for short-term water supply for flower arrangements, so they don't wither before you get a chance to get to your destination.

I have this plant. But I have done a poor job of keeping it watered and hydrated. Mine has long roots like this one and I thought it was a great idea. I do have smaller versions of this product, so I'm going to try this and see if it helps.

I grew a vanilla underneath a Musa one winter and the air-roots were very, very happy. Those huge leaves must release quite a bit of humidity.

I wonder if one has to continuously move the tubes as the roots elongate.
Highly tiring style I would say. hahaha
