hi orchid whisperer (or anyone else who has done the vase type culture outside)

Im thinking of setting up the vase culture using recycled 2 litre soda bottles outside on my sunny patio.

did anyone ever experience any burning of the roots (especially growing root tips) that touch the sides of the container? particularly on hot days?

Im just coming off 2 weeks of vacataion where I was able to mist like 3 times a day and dunk every other day and I saw a huge improvement in all my hanging vandas

.... now that Im back at work they wont be getting as much TLC and Im trying to devise a system to safely maintain some moisture during the week.

any Ideas/suggestions are welcome

oh I live in an apartment with a west facing patio

Hi SimJam

I never had any problem with the roots burning in the plastic containers. I gradually acclimated the plants slowly to nearly full sun (here in Georgia, that sun is probably less intense than Jamaica, but still hot).

A few things you should be sure to do when using the soda bottles:

1. There should be some way for water to drain out of the bottom, but you don't need big drainage holes. I simply used a saw and cut slits in the bottom of bottle.

2. Poke a few air holes in the side of the bottles, this just allows a little air circulation through the container. They don't need to be big holes, and you don't need many holes. For my liter bottles, I had maybe a half dozen holes the diameter of a pencil.

3. Don't forget to use a few rocks in the bottom of the container, the added weight keeps the plant from tipping over.

Good luck!

Aye Orchid Whisperer ... thanks bunches.

Im hoping that starting the vase culture now when its "cooler" jamaica-wise lol (22 - 26C) and working up to 35 ish by july or so should be gradual enough ?

I actually still intend to have them hanging so im working on a contraption lol. I have the bottles prepared already just need to rig them up.

Im also gonna change out the wire used to hang the baskets to jute or sisal rope because ive noticed a little stress on the leaves that rest on them.
