Vanda question
Default Vanda question

Hi everyone

I recently bought this V Pakchong Blue. My very first Vanda! and I love it, it is also fragrant!

Here in Puerto Rico we are beginning the windy season, so while I've read that they need sun, I placed it here where it is somewhat shielded from the wind and the full sun. It will get the setting sun rays through those openings in the column.

This is a porch with an aluminum awning. I also placed the Cattleyas away from the suns rays because it has been blazing (which is surprising for this time of year) The suns ray fall right where the Catt rack begins.

Is this a place where it can do well or should I place it in a sunnier location.

I have been to a nursery where the owner has a Vanda that he hung from a small palm and it gets the full blazing sun all day. It has a light peach color flower.

Ialso placed the long roots in this wire basket, but I have also seen them planted o the web. So can I plant in a basket, what would be best?

All information and advice will be greatly appreciated. My orchid would not be where they are today, were it not for the wonderful advice I have received from all.

Thank you!

nice!
I think that it could be the right place. your vanda has a lot of light there, and that's a really good thing. my vanda is taking full sun during these days, but here, in this period, the sun is not so strong, so..
about the basket, well, usually vandas prefer to have the roots completely free, but if you prefer to grow it in a basket, choose a wood one, and maybe keep it free, I mean, without any bark.

Full sun in Puerto Rico might be too much. Maybe a bright indirect light is best for you.

Protecting it from the heavy winds is definitely a good idea. You don't want your Vanda to pretend it's Superman and start flying around the place.

Hi, ditch the wire basket, it can cause burn on roots, especially the young ones. If you wish to use a basket use either plastic vanda style or slatted timber. I use both as well as plain bare root. With the slatted pot, I never use media though.

In regards to position of the vanda, stick with bright indirect light until you can work out what your vanda likes or doesn't like. Hard for me as I'm not familiar with your country or conditions but I would be aiming to getting it acclimatised to hanging under the actual awning itself.

Every couple of weeks I would consider rotating the plant 180 degrees. You will probably find that the vanda tries to grow toward the brightest direction of light, rotating it will help it stay straight.
