Sedirea Japonica Fridge treatment.
Default Sedirea Japonica Fridge treatment.

Hello all!! So I have been growing a sedirea Japonica for over a year now and all I get is new leaves and tons of new roots. I see there is a dried up flower spike at the leaf axis, so I know it can bloom. The question is what triggers it to do so???

I know they like cold winter rests sometimes even a bit above freezing at night. I was wondering how to provide this temperature drop given that I grow in an intermediate to warm environment.

I was thinking I could do the following: put it in the fridge in a ziplock bag at night, put it in the garage at night, or crack a window in the winter (my parents and gesneriads would hate my face, so probably not the best option).

Opinions on these various options for providing the recommended night temperatures would be very much appreciated!!

Thanks,

Collin.

i would not put the plant in the fridge. if you want to lower the temperature you can keep it really close to the window in the winter. my plant blooms without the winter rest so i think it is not needed.

to get blooms, I keep the sedireas dry for around 10 days and water normally after that.

I hope you get some blooms soon!!

Mine are siting next to my west facing window from automn to late spring, take a lot of sun (double-glass window), experience temps down to 14 C (57F), and bloomed nicely last two springs .

I grew one for a few years in semi-hydroponics after it reached a good size it would bloom twice a year. I don't think drying out is the key to spiking in my experience since it was wet all the time. It was the colder night temperatures in spring and fall that did it for me.

Ok, so the refrigerator idea got shot down. The window idea is a possibility. What do you guys think about the garage idea?? Would car exhaust hurt it or anything?

Thanks again.

Car excaust would certainly not be good for it, but also, how much light would it have?

as long as the temperatures never go below freezing it should be fine in the garage

It would have plenty of light because I will move it back under my light setup during the day.

I am not sure what part of the USA you live in, but is keeping it outdoors for a while in the fall a possibility? Maybe a location that receives as much light as your light set up (but not more)? You would need to watch the weather as it gets colder, you don't want it to freeze.

I live in Arizona where it gets very dry in the winter... humidity is around 20% so I don't think it will like being outside for very long.
