Vanda in a Vase - Orchid Board

I picked these guys up last week when I stopped by Home Depot a few days ago. This is my third time buying blooming vanda, and the first time buying NOID.

I have seen these before at Whole Foods and Home Depot, but they were horrible with flowers all bruised up and floppy, yet the same high price of $69.99!

This time, there were a few different colors, dark blue, blue (I know it's not real blue but,,,), pale blue, white, pink, and spotted dark blue, to choose from and most of them looked quite nice.

As much as I love these colorful big flowers, now I'm concerned that I might not keep them once flowers are gone. They are just too big and I don't think they will do well stuck in this vase for a long time.

The leaves look all forced to stay in the container.

Oh, well...for now, I'm just enjoying the beautiful flowers.

Is ID-ing them also nearly impossible like phals??

Now I see how they are growing from the question I gave on the other thread. I agree I don't think that growing style would be good long term, the look pretty snug. Oh, I LOVE the pink one (really both of them!), if you need a home to give it after the flowers are done, I have room (And would trade smaller plants)!

I got some vandas at my home depot too but they were just sold as hanging plants for $34. After the blooms, I trimmed the dead roots and babied them lol. I love vandas and I was surprised to see them at home depot so I bought four! lol

A very nice display with 2 vandas in vases. Now you need 3 more vases and 3 more vandas to complete the picture, lol.

My experience with vandas are.. buy vandas with lots of old flowering spikes, because some vandas can be reluctant bloomers.

Vase culture of Vandas is a pretty common thing, but it seems the leaves are usually mostly outside the vase. I'm sure it offers great advantages for shipping, retail display and short-term care this way, and might not be a bad thing long-term. As long as the leaves aren't broken by being forced into the vase there's really no harm. And it could certainly help with humidity.

Wow they are so beautiful! I have gone in so many different Home Depot's and Lowe's looking for Vandas or any type of Orchid other than Phals and I have yet to find one.

From what I've read about Vandas in vases is that they like to have just their roots in the vase. As the sun rises, this creates a hot humid environment around the roots but allows the leaves to stay dry and cool so they plant doesn't over heat.

Beautiful! A local supermarket chain here has been selling vandas like that for $50. They are beautiful, but the leaves do look very snug in the acrylic vase.

As for the identification, the vandas that are carried at my local store look like some of the more common hybrids, but like phals, you can't be positive without a tag. I believe the company that grows them is in Homestead, FL, you should send them an email asking if they can give you the names of your plants. If you don't have the information for that company on your plant, I would be happy to get it for you next time I go to the store.

I too would have bought four if they were $34.

I wanted the dark blue and white, but one, they did not look as fresh as two I bought, and two, they were just too expensive.

I would have bought more if there were not of that price.

I'm happy with these two for now.

The pink one is at its first flowering as I do not see any old cut spikes. It has so many leaves and this first spike is coming from upper part of the whole thing, so I'm guessing this one could be a tough one, but time will tell if I decide to keep it.

The blue one, which also has lots of leaves but leaves are smaller than the pink ones, has at least three or four older spikes, so it is definitely a willing bloomer.

I would honestly prefer to keep the pink one as I see blue one all the time, although I like them both.

Thank you, but I have the store info on the lable it came with. It is silver vase orhcids from Homestead, FL.
I might have to contact them and hopefully they can tell me what the names are for my vandas.

I've seen them in vases but never completely down inside. I'd be concerned about a fungal attack. I saw a nice display where the guy put the Vanda in a vase and supported it there with a round of hardware cloth that fit just inside the mouth of the vase. He had cut it so that it lodged itself there...and then put living moss around the base of the plant. It was gorgeous, growing and quite happy. (Although I'm not convinced that he's going to keep it like that for very long because the roots are growing like mad.)

I bought a few Vanda's at Home Depot this past spring that came in little wooden baskets. That was in Ft. Myers. The roots were all wrapped around in the baskets. Turned out, when I got home with them, the roots were in pretty bad shape. I've been playing catch up every since. Maybe I should drop them into a vase!
