One of mine is in bud right now, first time since I have the plant,,,and now I'm hearing about strange smells???

It is one of those undefinable orchid smells, very unique, I can't equate it to anything...maybe like a stanhopea wardii (that probably doesn't help). Don't worry, its not bad, just different.

Beautiful flowers, MRobert. And a very healthy-looking plant.

Susanne, don't worry. It's a nice smell. I have a Rhy. gigantea var. alba that's got a couple of spikes forming now, and it's flowers always have a very sweet smell to them (although perhaps some of the other colored varieties have scents that differ from the alba one that I have). They are a bit overpowering, however, if you stick your nose right up next to the spikes. So be careful! :-)

In interest of building the a knowledge base for this species (I was clueless when I got it), the blooms are still in A1 condition after being in bloom for 2+ weeks.

That's one of my favorites too, love the smell and love the flash when it blooms, and you are right that they last a long time.
My sweety tells me that this here is one of the parent plants of that particular cross that I have blooming at the moment:
(not so hot with the camera this morning yet, so the pics aren't the best)
I figured one with flash and the other without.

It is one of our best bloomers and does so faithfully each year even after having been moved several times to different locations, it's just a very thankful plant.
