Counting the individual flowers, as I have heard, is something the judges have to do when it is being considered for an award.

And counting is assigned to one of the probationary (lowest rank) or student judges.

Also, there is another thread on the OB, where someone was asking about the largest number of flowers anyone has had on a plant. The winner on that thread will presumably be a large Dendrochilum.
