Default Sarcochilus hartmannii in bloom

Species from eastern Australia - small, to medium sized; cool to hot growing; lithophytic (sometimes epiphytic)

I got this last June at the San Jose Orchid Exposition. I wasn't familiar with these, but was charmed by them. The culture, as explained to me by the seller, seemed quite do-able for me.

This has grown outside all year, getting a bit of direct sun in the morning in summer, mostly shade in winter where it's at. I repotted this from bark into chc mix last autumn, after new growth had started. I try to keep the media lightly moist.

Blooms are slightly less than 1". Leaf span of the largest fan is about 8" - height around 3 1/2".

Thanks for looking

Beauty of a plant! I have a nice collection of Sarcochilus'. So they've flowered for you coming into Spring? I was expecting mine to flower in Autumn, but no luck yet. Always makes me happy to see local orchids abroad.

Thank you, everyone

Chris - yes, everything I have read (which isn't a ton, but a few websites) say this species is a spring-summer bloomer. Plant is expected to do nothing for a while after blooming, and new growth should start in autumn. Mine has followed this schedule thus far.

I am definitely interested in growing more Sarcs - love this one! Seems that a fair number of Australian species do well in the climate here

Bud - it does have a subtle, sweet fragrance

Well done Sonya!

Sarcs are such wonderful little plants. I didn't realize this one was fragrant I just might have to give it a shot.

This is a nice one! There is something about white flowers, that always brings out the "want" in me.

Congrats, Sonya!

I have had one for several years but have never been able to bloom it. A gent I spoke with at an orchid show last month said that they need a cold spell to spike. So that is on the agenda for next year.
