Help with Renanthera Monachica seedlines please?
Default Help with Renanthera Monachica seedlines please?

Hi all,

I just received a flask of really beautiful little renanthera monachica seedlings. They all look very plump and healthy and I want to be sure they get off to the best start possible. I have seen mixed info on their light levels and humidity requirements as well whether or not they should do better mounted. Any and all suggestions are appreciated!

We are in South East Texas where the humidity is quite high and summers are HOT. I had thought, to mount them and, during the warm time of the year to hang them outside under the pines where they would be protected from direct sun. But I have seen some sites that say they wont bloom if they don't get direct sunlight. (These little ones are a long time from blooming anyway.) I also have a small green house if the native humidity is going to be too low?
Anyway, any and all advice is GREATLY appreciated!

Shere

They do better as potted plants. Seedlings should never get direct sunlight until they have grown some and have a significant root system.

Thanks. That's kind of what I thought as well. So you think the greenhouse with shade cloth would be better than outside in dappled shade?

They are all nice plantlets with long plump roots.. the roots are much longer than they are!

I appreciate your help

I always go for a semi-controlled space i.e. a greenhouse with shade cloth because i can control the intensity of sunlight to the plants and I find they root faster and look very lush. Only most my personal collection of hanging vandas are in trees bc I find they like that location and flower nonstop throughout the year. Also for all my new vandas whether hanging or potted that i want to establish with good roots and a first spiking i keep in my greenhouse before i move them out into the landscape and naturalizing them in trees.

Thanks so much for the tip
May I ask what part of the world you are in? I would love to be able to have some of mine outside on the trees/naturalized but I worry its too cold in the winter... they would have to be brought in. But maybe for the warm time of the year? We are in South East Texas.

I am in Jamaica.
The rule here for Vandas is that if the temperature gets below 15 degrees Celsius then its time to start moving them inside for sure. Thats about 59 degrees Fahrenheit.
