Default Vanda Mokara Golden Nugget & Rhynchorides Dragon Charmy

Evening

I decided to be brave and I ordered 2 young vanda plants from a orchid specialist in europe.
I ordered one of each of the above.
They arrived today, beautifully packaged. Well wrapped and protected.
I instantly put their roots in tepid water with some feed and left them to soak and acclimatise for a while.

After lots of reading I decided to pot them for now in bark. Im not sure whether this is tne the right thing to do as have never had a young Vanda before. I only have a mature ascocenda (in vase culture)But I found lots of references to vandas being potted.

The roots on the Mokara Golden Nugget were really quite long and thin, so I carefully wound them in the pot before filling with bark. The Rhynchorides Dragon Charmy roots we much shorter but thicker.

Both now potted and sat on the same windowsill as my Ascocenda.

If anyone has any advice regarding my new babies I would appreciate some comments.

Mokara golden nugget has little slender leaves and Rhynchorides Dragon Charmy has chunky leaves.

Nice plants!

The Rhynchorides should be an easy bloomer. I would think first blooming in about three years. I have not grown this hybrid but its parents are very easy to grow. Watch out for sunburn with this one.

The Mokara in my experience are fairly slow growers. It should be able to take stronger light than the Rhynchorides.

Happy healthy plants....I presume more or less these are both two year old seedlings....they are going to bloom in a couple of years....you may bring it outdoors in the summer gradually weaning it to direct sun....in winter don't let it go below 50F...they will produce magnificent blooms....

Thanks for your advice - which is gratefully received.
Im looking forward to seeing these mature but I do hope i can get them to grow into more mature plants and see them bloom.
I shall in the summer months move them from their current position as that windowsill takes the full summer sun.
I shall post periodically with updates on their growth (if any!!!)

I have my baby rynchorides and aeridovanda in little baskets with just a little sphag, and I have set these in clear plastic containers. This adds extra humidity, very similar to vase culture. When the moss is dry I soak the roots, then drain off the water. I have had them this way since early last summer and they are growing very well. Rhychorides grows very quickly.

Give them high N food (like those 30-10-10) to speed up their growth.
That's what I learnt from the orchid farmers here in our region.
And they feed as much as 3 times a week. Bright shade no direct sun. Definitely no high heat.

Give them fish emulsion/seaweed too. Orchids really love these smelly stuff. lol

No direct sun? That may be different in our climate. I give mine morning sun, but perhaps now that it is getting close to spring I will avoid too much sun. It gets stronger now.

Oh, morning sun is fine as long as no harsh heat

Over here such seedlings are housed under netting (even for terete vandas and sun-loving mokaras). The 11-3pm sun is killer!

Here it isn't that strong. In the winter I don't worry at all but now that the sun is getting stronger I have started using a shear curtain. In the summer I only protect my vandas at the hottest part of the day, but seedlings are much more sensitive.
