Haraella Bud Seeks Pollen! Male
Default Haraella Bud Seeks Pollen!

Here's a pic of the latest bud on my Haraella odorata/retrocalla. It's in my paludarium, and this is the second bloom off of the first spike since I moved to a more accessible location. It's such an easy growing plant for me, and is theoretically compatible with so many other excellent species that I wanted to be able to pollinate it easily. It used to be down low under a partial overhang with water intermittently trickling over it, and it did great. However the flowers tended to get beaten up a bit by the dripping water, and it was inconvenient to reach for pollination. I moved it to the very top of the enclosure, with its roots in a channel which intermittently floods but no water dripping from above. I was worried about it getting too much light, but by having it all the way up it's outside the cone of greatest intensity and all the light it gets is scattered. Oh and by the way.....WTB Looking To Cross Haraella, Pollen Wanted! - Orchid Board - Most Complete Orchid Forum on the web !

Chances are probably pretty good that somebody you know either has some wilted Phalaenopsis flowers or knows somebody who does.

Hopefully sooner rather than later the mass producers will start creating some interesting Phalaenopsis crosses (ie with Vandas, Neofinetia, Sarcochilus, Rhynchostylis, etc)...but until then you can try and do it yourself.

Why not wait? Find a phal you really like. Retrocalla blooms near constantly.

Retrocalla has only 1 registered progeny - a cross with Phal Wedding Promenade in 2005. ( Haraenopsis Nanzhi Pink )

I don't know what ultimately happened on this cross:

Unfortunately I can't find any photos.

I have a bunch of likely candidates that will hopefully bloom this spring and summer, but if I can get a head start it would be nice! The Haraella is already starting its next spike so I guess I can wait if I have to......
