Default My new arrival - Ascocenda White Angel *UPDATED*

Well it has finally arrived

It has exceedingly long roots. Had to soak it for a while to make the roots pliable so it would fit into the vase. Took me a few attempts but got it eventually.

The flowers are really delicate, about 2cm across. Purple/blue lip. Very feint purple veins through the petals.

I am keeping it through the winter months on my kitchen window sill, but through the summer it will have to move as that window cops the sun big time.

This is my first one of this type of ascocenda. Its a bit of trial and error with regards to watering, im learning as im going along.

I can see a new bud on the next leaf stem up forming, so lets hope it sends a new spike up.

Lovely Vanda....you keep this in the brightest window of your home....have it soaking for 5min in water in that vase every three days....if you have central AC it will dry this plant fast so you need a humidifier with an oscillating fan....

I soak once a week with weak fertilizer and mist daily.
My vanda has been growing over a year this way and it seems happy with vase culture.

Morning all,

Thanks for your kind words and useful tips.

@Bud - you said to keep it in my brightest window. I said in my 1st post in the winter months i would keep it on my kitchen windowsill. It is a very large window, and its sunny in that window most of the morning to early afternoon. Do u think that would be ok there?? im worried about burning it.

I will definitely have to move it in the summer as it scorches there. In the summer ithink i will move it into my bathroom - got a tall frosted window there which catches the sun in the early morning. (E/ne facing)

With regards to watering/spraying. I have been spraying the roots everyday so far. I have been keeping an eye on the roots and as soon as they start to look silvery i'm spraying. I know this is a bit of a daft question but do I need to spray the leaves as well?? I last filled the vase with water 2 days ago so will have another fill up tomorrow.

I have a water butt in the garden - i take it rain water is ok??? I water all my Phals with the rain water and they love it.

Sorry for lost of questions - i have been frantically reading lots of informatin on the net and I purchased a book and just want to make sure it is ok. I dont want it to die on me.

Thanks again in advance, all your hints & tips are gratefully appreciated.

Rainwater is fine. Be careful that you aren't over watering. If the roots are in a vase, they don't dry out quickly. I had a bare root asco that I was soaking a couple of times a day. It began to rot, so I put it in a basket with sphag and charcoal. It is easy to tell when the sphag is dry. It is normal for vanda roots to be grey in between waterings, unlike phals, which need more water.

Did you break any roots while stuffing them into the glass vase?
