The 2nd pic kinda jolted me a little.
Sorry again - cos I just went to 1 of our local orchid farms over the weekend and finally cleared up all these terete, semi-, quarter-t, strap stuff.
Basically, farm owner says the broader/wider the leaf the lesser its light requirement cos the broad leaf absorbs light easily compared to, say, our national flower (full-terete) which has these pointed/needle-like foliage and which really needs to be hit daily by direct sun.
So when I saw the 2nd pic I was thinking ooohh, hope all that brightness doesn't come with heat, like a noon-day sun

No problem!! I don't like burnt vanda leaves either!

My plant is in the sun for literally a few minutes and I'm questioned as if it's my first vanda. I'm sorry for posting plants I was happy to have just unpacked.

I'll hooray you NikkiK!! , I like it a lot.
I found one in Oz as well referred to as compactum but obviously I am keeping in mind what Bud had to say. I'm seriously thinking about handing over a few $$$ just to see what it turns out like so I'm keen to keep track of how yours does.

Thanks for the catch in the title, I didn't realize I forgot the second 'r'. I put the 's' at the end because I was referring to two new plants, but I can see how it adds confusion.
Note: It won't let me edit the title, only create a new one underneath.

Bud, I forgot to mention in the previous reply, when I spoke to the grower about the dwarf form he said the flowers are the exact same size as the regular form of V. merrillii, but less per a spike. The one pictured has already bloomed and is working on a very tiny keiki, so far it looks like individual plants will stay small, but grow wide instead of tall because of its clumping growth habits, which is also what the grower described to me when we spoke about it.
I guess only time will tell because there is a lot of mystery and contradictory information about the growth habits of this plant online.

ask the help of the kind OP's to correct your title....its becoming cooler so my Fall blooming Vandas have spiked and some have opened its buds to full bloom and some got rained on bigtime....but I might still be able to photograph my merrilii hybdrid with denisoniana....
well I don't have the dwarf so I cannot compare with my regular merrilii specie....its only what I read.... you on the other hand, have both so you can inform us of its progress....

Is it common in the US to buy orchids w/o blooms? or the prices for plants w/ vs w/o blooms are different?
Cos over here we can just go to any of the specialised orchid farms and buy one in any stage of bloom. Prices are all the same w/ vs w/o spike/blooms.

I would say a lot of it is dependent on where you live in the US and how available orchid greenhouses are to you. I live in Michigan where the winters can be long and cold, so most of my orchids I have to ship in from around the country. Since it can be difficult to find certain plants, especially if your not able to go to the greenhouse in person, you take what you can find (good vendors will normally take pictures).

Would love to see your merrillii/denisoniana hybrid, I've seen quite a few on eBay and they all look so different. Though, I don't think I've ever seen one I didn't like.
Currently, I have 4 vandas in spike. I believe I would have had many more if it wasn't for my tree falling earlier this summer. I will update on how big the merrillii (dwarf) gets and what the flower pattern is.

Thank you!! I will keep updating on the dwarf form of the V. merrillii, so far it has started a new keiki and the leaf span on it is no where near that of my two regular V. merrillii. If you decide to buy one we could compare.

I will post my pictures as soon as I have it open its bloom and flatten a bit....
Chatbud....plant with perfect opened flowers cost more than the spiking ones....the plants without flowers are the cheapest.

Awesome!! Yours really has a nice root system. Are you going to put it in a basket, mount it or just hang it as is?
