I only choose the medium sized Vandacious plants to be on S/H method. They easily produce new roots that will grow down all the way to the water, but the old roots die because they are not used to be in the water.
I still have to spray the topmost clay pellets everyday. I find it easier to have my Vandacious orchids in S/H with no fuss at all. Just don't forget to flush it once a month.
The smaller Vandacious plants get to be potted in media mix.
The large ones (roots over 4 feet) have to be hanging in a basket. I line the bottom with coconut fiber and curl the roots around inside the basket and then sprinkle it with media mix.
My apartment gets to be very dry in the summer because of the centralized AC with dehumidifier that is why I try to put as many orchids out on my fire escape= the humidity is high in Manhattan atmosphere in the summer....but in winter I put all my plants indoor and the centralized heater have water steam coming out to humidify all my plants.
Temperatures never get down to below 50F(for some= I provide a heat matt in winter=only those that are very near the glass pane)
fertilizer weekly weakly with no winter rest
