Default Renanthera Kalsom 'Red Dragon'

Renanthera Kalsom 'Red Dragon' is a primary orchid hybrid, a cross between Renanthera philippinensis (seed parent) and Renanthera storiei (pollen parent). The large-sized, tropical orchid hybrid, reaching highs up to 1.5 to 2 meters, has been registered with the Royal Horticultural Society under the name Renanthera Kalsom by S.Y.Alsagoff in 1977.
This is a mericlone that I acquired a year ago from Kawamoto Orchid Nursery. The plant blooms 3 to 4 times per year sometimes the flowers lasts for months that this particular plant will have flowers all year long. I had to wait for overcast skies to capture the fire engine red color of the flowers. This plant is at least 6-7 years old and is very well established standing 16 inches and the widest leaf span is 11 inches; flowers at 4 inches in diameter.
*This is a plant from their Dad’s (Les Kawamoto) private growing area. He has (reluctantly) agreed to sell this plant = he rarely sells plants in his private collection. Out of the kindness of his heart he took pity on me and agreed to part with it since I begged that I really want to have an established plant than a seedling.
This came to me potted in medium bark, charcoal, lava rock, sponge rock and hydroton. I have to give it bright light south facing window, warm temperatures and high humidity all year. In summer this is outside on the fire escape and in winter it is near the heater, electric humidifier with oscillating fan given our low humidity and cold winters in Manhattan. Weekly weakly fertilizer alternated with seaweed mix and worm tea mix.

Yes, very beautiful
All the red Renanthera family have very head-turning blooms.

Pls let me know if posting my pic here is inappropriate and I will delete.

Pic is of a Renanthera at the nursery.
The boss was selling this S$20 per pot.

These can't be placed under direct sun?

Hi Bud. Congratulations on blooming Ren. Kalsom 'Red Dragon'. This is probably one of the best red Renantheras around today. There are many clones of Kalsom 'Red Dragon' floating around and many are starting to bloom. Like you I was fortunate to get a plant from the Kawamotos early on so I had a head start in blooming my Kalsom. I'm not sure if my plant was a meriiclone or a keiki from the parent plant but the flowers are a show stopper when in bloom. I posted a picture of my plant in bloom at this link: Ren. I wish I had room for this one! It's gorgeous! Someone told me that renanthera only bloom once a year. I had a hybrid seedling called Azima, but I lost it.
