I haven't yet tried going with seedlings. I'm too impatient. If it's not flowering size, I tend not to get it.

She is beautiful, Bud! Congratulations!
I just got one too, but it is about 5" tall, so I will have to wait a couple of years before she blooms. At Kawamoto, they have a huge display of blooming Red Dragon outside in full sun. It is spectacular! I will take a photo of it next week and post here if you don't mind.

I prefer blooming size plants too, but can't always afford them. There are some plants that I wouldn't be able to buy locally, so I settle for seedlings off Ebay. There are some really unusual hybrids. I got a rhynchorides and a Aeridovanda that way.

Species often bloom only once a year, hybrids are more generous. I have a mature Ren Kalsom 'RD', which is about 7 ft tall now (and due to be cut down). It typically blooms 3 times a year.

This one is so gorgeous, I hope mine is gonna bloom this year, after doing absolutely NOTHING last year since I got it, it started to send new thick roots all over the place in November:-)

I can also be very patient to grow from seedlings but for some orchids I tend to kill them while young so it is to my advantage to acquire large mature specimens if I can. Renantheras have to be at least 5 to 6 years old to begin flowering....it is very hard to grow leaves and roots so if you have a tall plant with thick pencil roots it is quite magnificent when it blooms.

Blooming sized mature specimens can be really expensive....but I am lucky to chance upon some orchids for a song and that is when I just gotta have it.

WOW! seven feet is a marvel....you must not cut it.....it is a rarity....it must be magnificent when it blooms.

You have a Renathera Akihito Emperor that is a collectible very nice hybrid of cascading 24 flowers in a spike of scarlet red butterfly shaped that grows thick pencil roots and can start flowering if they reach a foot and a half tall....I hope it blooms for you this summer.

The way you described your Renanthera Akihito Emperor has got me wanting one! That sounds gorgeous! I think I will need a compact one though. Our little house is pretty full.

Hi Bud: Beautiful Renanthera, I have one bought from Kawamoto also. It still is fairly small, maybe 12" or so but looks good so far.
What I want to know is what is that absolutely beautiful Platycerium behind the orchid.
