If you look closely at the second pic, you can see in the closeup that there is the beginnings of a sharp delineation between the group of cells that make up the root tip and the group of cells that will start forming the velamen.

Look deep between the leaves for spikes. I just spied my first one! Check your plant and there may be old spikes that you can see where they come from.
