Default V. Gordon Dillon; flowers all year round

This one has flowered all year round since i started caring for it as it was just coming upon 2 years ago that it was in bad shape. I can always count on it to have a spike coming up even before the previous one completely fades. Now if I can just get it to dbl spike! I almost did it the blooming before this but it aborted one of them.

Enjoy!

That orchid is one I've been looking at to get for a vanda. Where did you buy yours? Has it been a really picky plant or fairly easy as far as feeding and light? I see you''ve got it outdoors. I'd have mine in a greenhouse till it got cold out n then I'd have to bring it inside.

Any advice?

Vandas like a lot of light, and they need to be regularly watered and dry out again fairly quickly (like a daily "tropical downpour"). They have a reputation for being hungry feeders. They generally don't grow well potted, so being bare rooted, they will take a lot of TLC. I have one vanda, and keeping it happy takes a lot more of my time than any other plant (because watering all those roots without getting the entire room soaked is "a mission"). Depending on your climate, things with a strong V. coerulea "dose" in their ancestry may handle somewhat cooler temperatures better than the more tropical ones.

There may be others, but the premier breeder of vandaceous plants I'm aware of (in the USA) would be RF Orchids in Florida. Motes is also a big name.

I have a couple of plants from RF Orchids that somehow made their way to South Africa, and they seem pretty good. (A Rhynchostylis coelestis and an Ascocentrum Mona Church). If you're pushed for space, vandas are pretty large beasts, so one of the smaller vandaceous species or hybrids might be better than a full on vanda.

I don't know if it's a light thing, but the plant looks blue in some photos and purple in others. I have a hybrid of this that is purple.

I have a Rhynchostylis is semi SH. Since I discovered this method, the plant does not require as much constant care. The clay beads keep the roots moist without drowning them.
This particular Rhynchostylis can handle a little cooling in winter so I grow it outside.
I wish I can grow the Vanda in the picture. But if you live in Jamaica you can pretty much treat it as a garden plant. It is very pretty!

Anyways, here is my Rhynchostylis in semi hydroponic

I got mine from a local plant sale. It really isn't picky at all and is a reliable bloomer once it is happy. Vandas aren't very hard to care for once you know the cross you're dealing with. Where it is hung gets a lot of dappled direct sunlight as well as a lot of bright daylight. If you notice the leaves are an apple green and sometimes a slight hint of yellow. The leaves don't burn though because I'm not short of air movement outside. I also water twice a day everyday when it's hot. I also fertilize everyday as well after drenching it with water. Your greenhouse will be fine so long as it gets bright light, full morning sun if possible, frequent fertilizing when the time is hot (I fertilize everyday bc of my tropical climate, you would need to curtail fertilizing when the temperatures drop). Lots of air movement and good humidity when the air movement is high. When it gets cold just ensure it gets gd light and dries thoroughly between waterings. As for where to get one, I don't see many online. Try eBay though.

It's as purple as they come. Like a grape purple.
