Euanthe sanderiana (double spiked blooms)
Euanthe sanderiana
The mother plant through the years has given me 4 kiekies and 5 years ago I decided to keep the 4th kiekie that also provided me with a small baby plant: I have the mother and daughter blooming and the granddaughter is thriving well.
The "Waling-waling" in the Philippines (sold expensively as cut flower in floral arrangements) and is also called Sander's Euanthe, after Henry Frederick Conrad Sander, a noted orchidologist. Heinrich Gustav Reichenbach originally named Euanthe sanderiana as Vanda sanderiana.
It has two forms, pink and the alba. M. Roebelin discovered the original pink variety in the Philippines in 1881 or 1882. Rudolf Schlechter separated Euanthe from Vanda in 1914 due to structural differences in the flowers. For breeding purposes and registration by the Royal Horticultural Society, it is still treated as a Vanda.
Euanthe sanderiana is endemic to Mindanao (southernmost Philippine island) found on trunks of dipterocarp trees at elevations below 500 meters. Over-collected, the plant is considered rare in nature. Thanks to breeders and growers: we can still enjoy and grow this plant. The orchid is revered and is worshiped as a diwata(deity) by the native Bagobo tribe. It is often favorably used in hybridization.
This is presently hanging on my fire escape bareroot (Manhattan does have the heat and humidity that vandaceous love in the summer) and then in winter it is placed inside a large glass vase at the center of my bathroom window. Weekly weakly with Algoflash fertilizer and alternated with seaweed mix and worm tea mix.

Thank You, flexdc !
You are right, this plant is not easy to grow. I had problems with scale, water droplet spots and fungi ... but with the help of other members and from following religiously the culture of this plant: I was able to establish the mother plant and let it bloom and give me keikies....I have all in all five plants including the mother and they bloom beautifully ....the mother comes with me on tours packed well in a wedding box thru airports and hangs at the center of the bathroom window in every hotel I am in...now its the mother, daughter and grandaughter that accompanies me.
*no awards...I refuse to let my plants be judged
