do they like to be more on the dry side??

They like to be watered thoroughly and frequently, but dry quickly. That is why many people grow vandaceous orchids bare root in baskets and water daily.

'growing on the dry side' is different from: 'wait til it dries and water it'...
there is a big difference=you might dehydrate the plant
this plant feeds a lot and drinks a lot=soaking wet with water but wait til it dries out then water it again =there might be a very short interval of dryness (the roots turn ligher)....whereas: 'growing on the dry side' means you can let the plant dry for a longer period before watering
