Sedirea Japonica - Daruma type Male
Default Sedirea Japonica - Daruma type

I have had this plant almost a year and its done almost NOTHING ! It has grown a few root extensions but that's it. Is this typical ? I have it growing intermediate to cool. Its with another Sedirea - large type - that has flowered and is growing a new leaf. Out of my entire collection this is the slowest grower and if it didn't grow roots I would have sworn it was plastic !

you really must have a lot of patience with this plant. but if you make it reach maturity, it will continue on growing and before long its a specimen...
put it outdoors in the shade this summer. the humidity in your area will help it grow more sturdy and robust...
it takes 5 years for it to really get used to your environment

I don't know about this particular variety, but came across this thread not long ago ...

I guess patience is needed with this species.

well the plant must have got the message.........its growing a tiny leaf. Actually the leaf is growing quickly in comparison to the rest of the plant.
I bought it in a pot, didn't do well
Trfrd it to a cork mount with a sphag backing - grew new roots, then stopped
Trfrd it to a piece of river driftwood, didn't like it at all
Back to a clear pot in a fine fir bark mix. Voila - a new leaf.
As a result of the above I don't think the daruma type likes to be mounted. Would like to hear from anyone else who owns it. Seems like its a Hausermanns special as I haven't seen it anywhere else.

Do you have pictures? I would love to see it. I have a few things I grow mounted but have noticed the Japanese orchids seem to prefer not being mounted. My Neo hated being mounted.

My sedirea does really well with a winter rest and being potted in sphag.
