Personnally I wouldnt bother taking it out of the basket just get a vase that fits well, I have two in baskets and have used the baskets to create wire hooks to stop them slipping into the vase.

I would definitely look for another vase I hunt them out depending on the root growth I have one that has a lot of growth at the top and is very wide so I bought a vase to match.

I agree with some of the other comments dont remove any roots and when you do it soak them well first to give some flexibilty.

I soak mine just once a week for about 30 minutes then pour the water out I then mist into the vase daily during flowering this will vary depending how hot and humid your conditions are. I am obviously cooler as it is spring here.

Dont keep them sat in water though as they will rot eventually

Man, reading this makes me want to get a Vanda just to try this out. I was thinking of trying it with my Trichoglottis but its the climbing type and would be hard to contain all of the roots in a vase.

Sounds so unreal that I just may try it. Think I'll buy a little one from the Lowe's or Home Depot that come in those little plastic bags so I won't be out tooooo much money if it doesn't work.

What do you do for fertilizing??

Your local Lowes has orchids in little bags? I'm thinking about where I can get a Vanda myself without spending too much.

Yes, they frequently have many vandas and I'm thinking (but haven't been there in a few weeks) they have little cats - packaged in long narrow plastic bags with a hang tag stapled to the top and hung on normal hanger thingys that they hang merchandise from - out in the garden section - usually close to all the phals that they are selling in pots. I don't remember the cost $5?? maybe. They are quite small and I'm sure won't bloom for quite some time. I've had one for over a year and it's put out leaves and roots, but that's all. Of course, part of the problem COULD be that I didn't fertilize it for the first year either. :-) Just sprayed it with water ever morning and let it hang outside when the weather was warm enough.

Good luck if you decide to try it. Keep us posted how it works. I have decided NOT to try it - at least until we get back to Florida and we'll sit there for 6 months. That's all I need to do is convince my husband we now have to not only transport all my other vandas, but one in a GLASS VASE!!! He might draw the line.

wow... the orchids at my neighborhood lowes only has various phals and some oncidiums and dendrobs that range from 21-25 dollars. home depot is the same, except they have a few small dendros for 14 dollars. I usually go to trader joes... just came back got myself a mini and a brassia. muah ha ha.

It's the same here. Never seen a vanda or catt in a bag (no pun intended). There isn't a Trader Joe's in the State that I know of......

Please inspect, isolate and repot your orchids from TJ.
I bought one last year and it killed 4 orchids, and comitted suicide lol ( I wasnt familiar with isolation and repotting). It came with lots of mites and other pest suprises under the roots even though it was blooming beautifully

I live in AZ too, we dont have the largest orchid selection which is frustrating, I end up ordering online lol

Found those vandas at Lowe's in Florida. Am now in Michigan, will have to see if they have any here and see what the price is.

Just got back from a trip to florida, and I must say I'm very jealous of you lucky floridians! I checked out a local Lowes and they had catts, vandas, all sorts of varieties we NEVER see up in minnesota at the big boxes! Great place to get an "experiement" plant!
