Vandas in Glass Vases

Nice looking Vanda. What's in the bottom of the vase? Do you put anything in the bottom to keep algae from growing? And, may I ask, what do you plan to do with it during the warmer months of the year? I really find this method of growing vandaceous orchids intriguing (although I haven't worked up the courage to put any of my own vandas or aerides in vases). But my major concern is what would happen to the vase when I put it outdoors during the spring-summer-fall growing season. I have imagined it getting too hot and acting as a very small greenhouse while the plant's in the sun, and thus roasting its roots, as well as burning any leaf surface that comes in contact with the hot glass. I've also wondered how well it would fair on a bench, as the vase doesn't look like it would provide enough stability in a breezy location. In any event, your plant looks wonderfully happy. Congratulations on doing such a nice job with it.

One could use a little physan in the water to prevent algae build up. I have a course scouring pad at the bottom of mine in the hopes to prevent roots from grouping down there too easily; so I can have 1/4-1/2" of water in the bottom to help humidity.

Where I live temps never really exceed 90 degrees anI'm planning on keeping this one indoors year round. So stability is not an issue either.

Temps in this growing area can get in the 90s or 100s easily if it's very sunner and warm (>70) outside and it never really resented much. In temps that hot condensation would form all around the inside of the vase and seemed to me that it effectively shaded the root system. Hope some of this helps!

Perhaps because I am relatively new to orchids I havent been daunted by trying new things I have several vandas in vases and so far they are doing well.

Telipogon as you are in the UK too what would you recommend to avoid algea building up, I water weekly the same as shown in your pics but I havent disturbed them by taking them out to clean the vases yet, I am also misting daily.

Hi

I did warn you I am a beginner I have had the vandas about a month, my oldest Phal is 5 months and thats the twin sten cream one to the left of the picture and its still in flower so i guess i am doing ok.

They clearly like the window sill but I know I will have to watch it as summer approaches as its is south west facing so may have to put some shading up. I figure I am past the initial i can kill an orchid stage but havent faced any searious challenges yet to dampen my enthusiasm.

The vandas appear to like this I mist twice a day and the average temp is about 20 degrees the window sill humidity is 50% but the vases go up to 80% when I have sprayed.

I will admit to being quite experienced gardener having had several large gardens and an allotment I currently have an unheated greenhouse starting to fill with this years seedlings, I just havent tried Orchids before.

I have found a couple of closer pics the one gives you a better look at the vases (taken a few weeks ago before I visited my first orchid show and nearly doubled my collection ) the other shows the Vanda Siam ink to give you and Ideal how big the flowers are. The Pink Ascda is springtime pink and has started ro put on another flower spike.

Are you serious!!!! I am officially jealous!
And I've just fallen off my computer chair!
Your Blooms are beautiful! Especially the vandas:
My vandas have been OK, one nearly died from our scourching Aussie sun, I've managed to save it, but it is in bad shape! As for the other one, not a spike in sight.
My poor vandas have been moved from too much sun to too little sun. I think the light level is good now, thanks to the light meter.
For all you Sandgropers reading this, you need to add additional material to the vase, because it is just too dry here.
I have added extra sponges in the vase to increase the humidity.
