Well now this has actually given me hope and maybe I can pick up a vanda after all. I fell in love with one that was blooming about a month ago at Hausermann's (starting to feel like a walking billboard for them) and I can't remember if it was Sansai Blue or Pakchong Blue. At any rate, I had my heart set on getting it until one of the employees told me that it's next to impossible to get them to rebloom and even they have a hard time getting them to bloom in the greenhouse. I'd like to try the vase idea, but might have to get a pretty big vase, as most of the vandas I saw there were pretty big and already in 6 inch pots. Looks like I'm heading back there this weekend.

Hi Buds,
I decided to go a cheaper route, just in case my experiment with this doesn't work so well and I'm ordering a few from ebay. Hopefully they'll turn out ok.

I have been told that sansai blue isnt too difficult to grow- I've heard pakchong blue is more difficult.
Natts Orchids, they grow tons of vandas and such and they're in your area you should check them out
index they seem like really nice people, I've talked to them on the phone!

Oh wow, they are close to me. Their prices seem comparable with Hausermann's though and I need to cut down on my addiction, not spread out and shop at MORE places! LOL! Those vandas are normal prices too and the pakchong blue that I ordered was like $8 including shipping.

please post pics of your plants when you get them! I got some from natts orchids- they were involved in the chicagoland orchid festival for many many years-- they should be arriving later this week, I'll be posting pictures when the plants, arrive- probably the best birthday gift yet! hoping that everything goes well....

Cookiemonster,
The pakchong blue that I ordered was from Bill Asia, not Natts. Yeah, the orchid fest was last weekend. I only went to my usual spot, but I saw tons of people from out of town with vans FULL of orchids that they were buying from all the participating area vendors. One lady told me she didn't know how they were going to fit their luggage back into the van!

I got my orchids today, sooner than anticipated AND OH MY GOODNESS~
all of them are in perfect condition, except for the sansai blue- this thing is MAMMOTH ! I kid you not, I was shocked to see how big it is, it seems like it has been through a lot, the smaller plants seem a bit happier and they sent me one in bloom- it was my birthday yesterday and wasnt so great so this definitely compensates! I will probably head out to home depot later and get some supplies to make these babies feel at home, Im very happy and excited but ALSO terrified that I'll kill them, I'll do what I can
I'll take pictures later of the pretties !!!!

I'm totally new to growing orchids, but this is a very interesting concept....I'm guessing this isn't something that beginner would even dream of attempting...but maybe someday.... I look forward to seeing the pics!!!
