I have been trying vase culture but I ended up putting the plants in plastic net pots with a little charcoal and sphag, and have them in the tops of the vases. It seems to work better for young plants. I find it tricky to get the right humidity when the plants are bare root, so I grow most of my large ones in baskets. They can be hung that way to save space.

Please forgive the poor quality of the photos, I don't have time to do a proper shoot with lights at the moment.

This plant is sitting in a south-facing window of my office, filtered good sunlight, it has a net pot which it's filled with roots and a cover layer of tillandsia usneoides. I mist daily and give it a good soak every week (give or take, it sometimes miss a week). It's bloomed twice and I'm considering giving it less light because the flower color on mine seems washed out compared to other examples I've seen online.

It has a very faint scent and is generally an easy-going little plant to keep. The nibbled edges of some of the leaves are thanks to the cat. Sigh.

It's pretty. i see what you mean about the colour though. It would be nice if it is more intense. I have a couple that I am growing this way. They seem to like it.

Thank you for all this information and everyone's input. I promptly put my sick Vanda in a wine carafe and have hung it on a low branch of my guava tree which gets sunlight. Wsh me luck because I am determined to see it live and flower! I will post a photo to show you for your comments

i was wondering if you ever had a situatioin were new roots start emerging from the central stem and after a certain length they start to shrivel or die back or stop growth altogether . I have encountered such a scenario when i tried to grow cattleyas and the new roots touch the compost and pop the tips turn black . do you have any suggestions . I grow my babies in wood slat baskets home made and with large grade pine bark and some moss inside since here in malta temperatures esepcially during our long sumer can reach 40 deg celcius . i water ta leats twioce a week in summer soaking the plant in rain water and try to mist at least twice daily so far i cannot complain but i still have to see some decent blooms . Any advice pls

I just read this entire thread as my FIRST vanda will be here in one-ish week. Ahhhh....
I'm still new to orchids in general!

Anyway, seeing as I live in a dryish home environment, I may try this vase method. I have no idea what I'm doing with vandas. Again, I'm new and currently only have 3 Phals.

If anyway cares to update, PLEASE do! I'll need all the help I can get.

I'm not sure what the problem would be with the roots dying back, but if you don't get good bloom it is usually from not enough light. Do you feed them regularly?

the tricky part with vandas is usually giving them enough light. I have one in a vase and my others are in baskets. it like baskets because it's usually easier to find hanging space, but I must admit that the one in the vase has nicer roots. I am a little afraid of cooking it when i put it in the sun, but so far it hasn't happened. it has been in the vase for a year now.
