The local orchid people in Ocala warn about buying orchids from Lowe's and HD - i.e., try to make sure if you buy any from those places that you get them the day they are delivered because most of the people working at the big box stores have NO idea how to take care of them.

I say the same thing about the Lowes and HD orchids. They are usually in pitiful shape and I have so far been unable to rescue any of them. There is a lady here that sells many types of orchids off of Baseline Rd on Fridays. Her plants are in fantastic shape.

I've never tried putting a vanda in a vase. Might be an interesting rehab project for one of those Home Depot plants. What have we got to lose?

Well, Hello Jen - you're an orchid newbie and live in Ocala. I do have a question - says you are in zone 8 - I think Ocala is in zone 9. Where the heck is Baseline Rd? I live on SW 27th Ave. What kind of orchids does that lady sell? Have you gone into Lowe's (the one right near I-75)? That's where I found the vandas in plastic bags for what I thought was a reasonable price. The first one I bought there over a year ago is still going strong - sending out new roots - no blooms yet, but is quite small.

We won't be back in Ocala until early Nov. Have you joined the local orchid society? I plan on doing so when we get back. They are very helpful, nice people.

Hi just thought I would update on my Vandas in vases
they have all finished flowering for now but I have some good new leaf and root growth.

Now comes the tricky part even in my south facing window will there be enough light to get them to flower again. luckily we are heading for summer here so hopefully...

I love this experiment. Here we get penty of rain and to maintain these vase plants I have to keep it under a roof.

THIS IS JUST AN AWESOME IDEA!!!!! I live in BC, Canada, in the mountains and it is bloody dry here, that might just be the best solution for my Vanda! Thank you!!!

Sorry for the delay in responding I'm trying to sort out moving house.

I currently soak them for 30 mins once a week and then when in flower spray twice aday, they arent in flower at the moment so I watch the colour of the roots and as they turn silvery I spray. They are in a very bright window so on sunny days need more spraying.

They are all as you can see putting on plenty of new root growth and leaf growth too, but no sign of spikes and I am told growing them in the house it might be very difficult to get them top reflower, but I am an optimist so will keep trying.

I started to use this way of growing end of last year ,
great results 2 of my vandas on show this week end at
peterborough am thinking of some way to make roots turn up before reaching the base ,I want to leave some water on the base without the root tips getting permanatly wet .
