My darwinara charm 'blue star' is producing another spike. This new spike that is forming is much more faster growing and the bracts are healthy and green. I think that the old spike, which is still stunted on the plant, was produced at the wrong time. I think that this plant is photoperiodic (whether it is short day plant or a plant that flowers when day length is around 12 hours in spring and fall) since when the first spike emerged it was placed under varying day lengths by artificial supplement light. Now that it does not recieve any supplemental artificial light it seems to spike normally and healthfully. It may also be flowering because of cool night temperatures (80F day and 63F-66F night). Anyways I am very happy.

Darwinara is a complex intergeneric hybrid ... at its core is ascocentrum and vanda, both of which thrive with 14 - 16 hours of daylight a day.
Would like to see posts of the new spike ... good growing!

Nice. How are you growing them? Green house or shade? Under a tree? Inside (not in Fl, I know) ?

I grow it inside on a west window and give it cattleya light. The room has greenhouse-like conditions like high humidity (65%) and intermediate to warm temperatures. Even though the darwinara is a complex hybrid, one of its parents is Neofinetia Falcata and this parent breeds cold tolerance and shade tolerance (N. Falcata tolerates medium light) into the vanda tribe. But I think cattleya light should be sufficient.
