Still confused about Vanda light

Sorry. I have jumped in on and read several topics about vanda.I still just can't understand this light thing for them. Does full light mean direct sun? ( am in TX coastal region)Or light that would be coming thru the windows on my glass window porch, about a foot back from glass. Sun till noon, then bright light the rest of the day. Then if I move it to the west side it gets full sun for several more hours. I am driving myself crazy tho the vanda seems quite well. It just hasn't bloomed since winter. This is a Roberts Delight, pink.
Would it help if I knew more about it's heritage? I don't know if it is species or hybrid or what. I am still trying to learn all that. Is it coreula family? Please don't laugh! I am really trying to learn all I can,the information out there is overwhelming,and seems to be written for those with already a basic knowledge. It looks healthy with new roots and new leaves since I bought it in bud in Oct. ( I think)I soak 20 min. every morn in light fert. Sometimes mist a couple times a day if I am home and I appears dry. It is in a basket.
Can someone tell me something abouy Roberts Delight that may help me. Thanks for your patience with a newbie ( 1 year) dummy!
Gladys P.S. I have 2 semi terete . Small, less than a foot tall. Am I correct in that they dont want full light so young, but will when they grow larger?
The Roberts Delight is a lot lighter in color than the pic. shows. And the Joaquim are not so yellow as pic. shows. The other is NOID vanda. Also there is more light in the first pic. than there appears to be.

Hi Gladys,

your Vanda Robert's Delight is a hybrid, for all hybrid names are written with Capital Letters. Vanda coerulea with a small "c" ist a natural species.

As for the light, I always look such things up at Internet Orchid Species Photo Encyclopedia as it is an extensive site. Surprinsingly, full sun is only recommended for V. coerulea and V. sanderiana! All the other Vandas require bright light but not full sun.

All hybrids will certainly stand a place with high light outside if they are carefully adapted to the higher light levels.

Hybrids with a lot V. coerulea and/or V. sanderiana pedigree want certainly fullest sun, e.g. V. Manuvadee, or else they will not flower.

You can look up any orchid heritage here: Royal Horticultural Society - Plants: Registration of Orchids. It may take some time because yours is a hybrid of higher generation.

Gladys, this is simple:
all my vandas are in the Florida sun all day with the only protection being the 20% shade they get from the screening on the screenroom around the pool.
Now that's a lot of light!

Just make sure they get lots of water too. Soaking is great, but they can only absorb so much in that 20 mins. Two or three hose soakings (gently) a day is better. The light you are suggesting is good, more hours would be better as long as the plant does not get too much too fast. No thermo nuclear blast of light, but don't worry just go gradually. The plant will let you know by getting a purple tinge. Then back off a little.

Gladys, your not a dummy only a dummy does not ask the question...we are all here to learn from each other...

Vanda's I grow are indoors and they stay right next to the slider going out to the patio. Could move it to a west window but way to driect in the Fl sun without shade protection. My Ascocentrum is in an east window with 4 hours of a.m. sun and it's Both with once a day watering and misting.

A neighbor has her's in a tree, have never seen her water it and it blooms religiously, I would think they are pretty forgiving

You are getting different growing habits, but your orchid will tell you what it needs/wants within a few weeks of a change.

Get the book by David L. Grove - Vandas and Ascocendas and Their Combinations with Other Genera. Part Two 'Plant Selection and Care' is great for how to grow the vandae.
BTW, Grove's collection of more than 3,000 plants is grown in not always sunny New York.

I have a Vanda insignis, I know it's a strap-leaf Vanda and can take only bright light, but I realise that the roots are 'dying' and it's not growing at all, any one can help with this?

insignis will do better with a little shade. Bright light is important for most vandas, but if humidity and good air movement aren't part of the care plan, the plant will sunburn and the roots dessicate.
