V. luzonica? - Orchid Board

I'm busy trying to pick an orchid online for my Valentine's present from my husband

, and found V. luzonica (also looking at V. coerulea). It is GORGEOUS and I love it, but cannot find much of any information online about caring for it. Is it much the same as V. coerulea? I was planning on sticking a coerulea in a vase per the sticky on this forum, would that also work for luzonica?

I live in west Texas, so it's (usually) fairly warm, dry in the winter and semi-humid in the summer, but will be moving to Phoenix in July where it is very dry most of the year.

Amanda, I believe that v. luzonica needs much warmer condition than v. coerulea does. I was very fortunate to get a large ( 3' long ) luzonica in bloom for $25 last year, which was one of keikis from a mother plant of 6' tall, per a grower.

Although it is doing so well, I have not been able to re-bloom yet.

Judging from your previous post, you saw it from Seattle Orchids? It is a great vendor. I have seen their plants at local orchid shows.

Where are you finding V. luzonica?

As Naoki mentioned, luzonica is a warmer-growing Vanda. It needs the same light levels as coerulea, but can't handle temperatures lower than 65 degrees fahrenheit.

I'm pretty sure vase culture would work for this one, too. The only thing I would worry about would be humidity, since these orchids like it pretty sticky.

I second this question. This is an uncommon species, and when I was looking for it, I never found it. Still, I'd like to know where I can get one - when I start to replace my lost plants, I'd like to add one to my collection.

Oak Hill Gardens has it. RF Orchids might as well. Just curious where the search led. I know RF has V. coerulea.

the owner of seattle orchids is a member here- incredible orchids. very nice person! if that is the vendor that you were looking at, i recommend them.

Both are wonderful species. But V. coerulea in general is 100x more easier to grow and bloom upto 2-3x a year. V. luzonica only only bloom once a year and the plant is also way bigger.
Do Pheonix get cooler at night?? V.luzonica is a very warm grower at need above 18-20'C night year round. If you can provide warm spot at night, go with luzonica.
