Ascocenda wacharin dissapointment, need help...
Default Ascocenda wacharin dissapointment, need help...

Hey All,

I ordered two orchids from this past week. Both are alleged to be bloom size (doubtful) and both came to me in terrible shape. I ordered a V. coerrulea that came with pretty severe cold damage on half of its leaves, and an Ascocenda Wacharin that was shipped in a clay pot. When I unpotted, I found a pot full of coiled, dead dry roots. The plant literally has two aerial roots.

Any suggestions on how to keep it alive? I emailed the nursery and asked for a replacement, but since I have the stupid thing, I might as well give it a shot...

I have the V. corrulea potted in coconut fiber in a very slotted pot that will hang, and the A. wacharin in a plastic pot, fine fir-bark medium. They will be about 6 inches from a south facing window here in Seattle, and received daily misting.

Well, the nursery said they import the A. wacharin, and this is how they always receive them. They have been super nice and helpful, so I can't really fault them any at all. Hopefully I can keep this thing going!

You can still fault them... Just because they are imported doesn't mean they should be passed on to you that way. The importer takes the risks, not you. They should be sure they are healthy before shipping them out.

Regardless of how nice they are, I don't think I'd do business with them.

Yeah, I sort of have mixed feelings. The one other Asc. hybrid I have does not suffer complete root die-back in the winter, and I told them so. They said they don't ship unless there is active growth of roots, which I guess technically there is. I am just used to receiving really robust plants when I order them, not ones that I have to baby along. I am hoping for some rapid root growth here.

Either way, they refunded me in total, so I can't be too put out by it.
