I lol'ed at your post on the flickr website about how you threatened the plant with an execution in the compost pile. You know what? I'm beginning to think that the way to force uncooperative Vandas to behave is by threatening them with death. Otherwise, they seem to make their own rules, and refuse to do anything when you tell them to. These plants have personality in spades.

Yours is a very nice plant, I love the brown tesselate petals and the contrasting pink lip. These are pretty easy to find around here, and I've been meaning to buy one, but they've taken the back seat to other plants on my wish list.

I'm in love with Vandas now. If I had more money, I'd get myself some more.

Stefano, I think it's an adult plant (it's two feet tall, so if that's a seedling then I need to find it a new home before it reaches adulthood). I have it growing in a clay pot, but there is no mix in the pot. It produces lots of roots, and they act like scaffolding, anchoring the plant in place.

Thanks. Meant if when you bought it was a seedling.
Do you grow it in a greenhouse/ high humidity?

It was around 8 to 10 inches tall when I bought it. It spends the spring, summer and fall on the front porch, where it gets lots of direct light between 7 A.M. and 2 P.M. In the winter it goes into a Southwest facing sunroom (a four-season sunroom that's tied into the home's ventilation/heating/cooling system). Humidity levels in the summer are very high, around 85 to 95%; the humidity drops to around 55% in the winter (the heating system has a humidifier that runs through it).

I just decided to look for one of these plants online...something amusing came up. Apparently due to some scientific research by and Indian doctor in the Indian Journal of Pharmacology, Vanda tessellata is proposed to stimulate the sexual activity of male mice. So...orchids really are an aphrodisiac! LOL...I think this is quite funny!

There are only four flowers on the spike, but they smell marvelous. The scent is positively one of the strongest I've ever smelled on an orchid (let alone a vanda) and I can't keep from going out to the front porch multiple times per day to sniff the flowers. They've been open for a week, so I'll be interested to find out how long they remain in good condition.
