Hi, I was wondering if Arachnis (spider or scorpion orchid) is part of the Vanda alliance.
I've had a couple of these orchids for a few years but they never flower. I'm in Western Australia and we have long hot and dry summers and cool, fairly wet winters. Does anyone have some growing tips that might help me get them to bloom?
Hi Marion, as Ted says, they are part of the Vanda alliance.
When crossed with Rhynchostylis they become Arachnostylis (Arnst.) When crossed with a Vanda they become Aranda and when crossed with Ascocentrum and Vanda, they become Mokara (Mkra.) etc etc.
Arachnis need to get quite large until they flower. I saw some grown outdoors near Brisbane, growing up palm trees in flower (almost 2 metres tall). They need lots of water and humidity during hot weather.
Arachnis needs at least 8 hours of direct sunlight a day to bloom well. Cutting will blooms as soon as it got establish, but seedling will prob grow at least 4-5 feet before they will flower for first time.
