Root Query in Vase Culture
Hi,
My Sansai Blue (as you can see) is being grown in vase culture.
Most of the roots have a nice covering of algae, and they are growing (slowly). The plant seems pretty healthy apart from this issue.
I have just these two little roots that i have just noticed have dark red (and quite pointy) root growth.
No other info really, I was just wondering if anybody had seem this before and if its ok?

I don't have any vandas, and don't grow any vase culture, but looks to me like new grow tips on the roots. I have an ascda which has very red grow tips on the roots.
I'm sure members with better knowledge than myself will chime in

Those are definitely beautiful new root tips, the color tells us that the color will most likely a purple or dark pink (in my experience, anyway).
What perfect timing for a great member-written article, one of which is part of our current contest!

(I am not, in any way, promoting one article over another...this article just fits the question )

I have a vanda that is hanging with the roots exposed and unfortunately it is pretty dry here, i soak the roots every morning, but i don't think it is getting enough moisture. I guess my question is do you have water sitting in the bottom of the vase, and do the roots touch the water? I can't quite tell from your pic.
They look like healthy new root tips to me!

Thanks for the re-assurance.
I water the plant properly every other day. (as in i fill up the vase with luke warm water, with a tiny 1/4 strength food) and then drain her out after 20/30 min of soaking.
On the days when she doesnt get a bath, i mist all the roots (as best i can in the vase).
I always leave about 2 - 3 cm of water in the bottom too for humidity. So the roots do not sit in the water. Don't know what i will do when the roots grow down to the bottom of the vase!
Also FYI, she is sitting in a south west facing window.
And Suzanne, the flowers are the ones in my profile pic. yup, purple/bluey
Thanks guys, just wanted to know it wasnt some weird rot or fungus or something.

Sammy,
My Vanda Blue Magic has AMAZING purple root tips when they're growing. It surprised me too when I first saw it, but then realised its just a happy vanda. Incidentally, it sits in the bottom of a vase, in a very happy state, so I wouldn't worry about your roots reaching the bottom!
Here's to South London Vandas! (there can't be many of them!)
