Good Question Winston,

I'd be really interested in the answer to that, too.

Or can you do anything to compensate for only about 50% humidity in winter?

I have 2 Sarcochilus Melba and a Neostylis Lou Sneary 'Kultana' that have been growing in SH for the past 5.5 years. The humidity is around 30% where they are at.

Pretty low humidity where I live - especially in summer. So far haraella and ascda are doing great! both blooming. I do spritz the haraella daily and the ascda gets some water every day.
Also doing ok, tho haven't bloomed - neofinetia and darwinara charm, and my aerangis biloba is rebounding after I had it potted and rotted the roots. It's been mounted now for nearly a year, and seems to be doing ok. Sedirea japonica also rebounding after going downhill during the summer - I made a humidity tray for it and that seems to have helped.

I think I might try a neostylis or a darwinara. Thanks for the input guys.

I have an Ascoscenda in a large glass vase. 30%-50% this time of year, dryer in summer. I soak at least 30 mins every 1-2 days.

Lots of roots and leaves and it's spiking right now.

I think it will work well for you. I have an Ascocentrum miniatum and an Ascocenda hybride (no name) which blooms every year.

In the winter there is about 10% humidity or lower and maybe up to 70% humidity in the summer (if it is raining ) Otherwise the humidity stays at around 40% here as well in the summer.

I just make sure that I water them twice a day and fertilize once a week.

Good luck!

Oh, and I grow mine with bare roots. Some people grow theirs succesfully in wooden baskets without bark. The roots are "rolled up" in the basket. That makes the roots keep the humidity from the watering maybe 2-3 hours longer than if they were hanging with bare roots. Perhaps a good thing if the humidity in the air is low. When I water mine the roots dry up within minutes in the winter... :/

I've never tried growing in baskets myself though.
