Seeing the actual flower will be believing. The image that we've seen thusfar is interesting, but I am not sure at all whether the hybrid is better than either of its parents. Per the photo, shape is of the flower is reminiscent of both brunnea and tessellata, but where's tessellata lip; what's the texture, size, etc. Which parent is dominant? Can you expect to see similarities in all offspring or is one particular offspring going to be so outstanding that it sets the mark for others?

I understand your notes, its something I would check also but refering back to the parents is not a huge part or really any part of our Judging system here even though, I do it on Primary crosses for sure, I would think very few Judges here would know what the parents looked like. ( or should look like grown and flowered properly)

I agree that few judges know what the species parents look like, but as the vandae are my favorites, I try to learn all I can about them.

What irks me is that many think that a perfect Ascocenda (Vanda x Ascocentrum) must be full, round and flat. You need to look at the characteristics of parents whether species or hybrid. For example, Ascocenda Mary's Lemon Drop 'Joanna' HCC/AOS (Ascda. Yoshiko Ise x V. denisoniana) is quite the opposite.

Laura, thanks for bringing this new hybrid to OB's attention. Roy, I'm enjoying this discussion.

Will post again soon.

cneos, we as one with what characteristics parents offer and some Judges perception. Like the Vandas, Paphs, Phrags I grow and the extensive breeding I've done over the years, you have to know what the possibles are to expand on or reduce those features. My honest opinion is that all panels should have 'Specialist' trainers/advisors in most common genera to explain these variations eg. your Ascda note, so the panel can be informed that this is not a poor flowers its because the parents are !!!!!!!!!!!
This may not help but atleast an informed decision can be made.
