Vanda denisoniana . A pict and a question Male
Default Vanda denisoniana . A pict and a question

Hello,

The specie Vanda denisoniana exists in many different colours and shapes. Unlike many Vanda , it is fragant mostly in the evening. In Thailand, it can bloom two times a year : in spring and, again, during September-October. Quite happy this plant blooms a second time ! I do have other plants with different colours (and shapes) but, sorry, no flowers right now.

The var hebraica is well known but is anybody know how is looking like vanda denisoniana var. tessellata ? It is very difficult to get any infos. There is a plant in Thailand called " Sam Poi Luang Sii Daeng". It can be translated like Vanda denisoniana red-pink colour. Can it be ? If not, how is this variety looking like ?

Best regards

I love the lime green color. It's good to see other color variation of this species instead of the usual yellow color.

V. denisonia comes in many color forms ranging from white with green cast to deep buttercup yellow. The variety hebraica often has distinctive spots.

V. brunnea ('the Light-brown vanda') was at one time considered a variety of denisonia however it is now recognized as a distinct species.

V. tessellata (syn roxburghii) or 'The Lattice-like Vanda' is similar form and color pattern to denisonia however it is a distinct species (not a variety of denisoniana).

David Grove's book 'Vandas and Ascocendas' and Dr. Grove's friends - Treekul Sophonsiri at Kultana Orchids and Kasem Boonchoo, both in Bangkok - have all been valuable resources of information on vanda species.

By the way, I have V. denisoniana, denisoniana v. hebraica and V. tessellata in my collection. All are fragrant for a few hours at dusk and early evening. The fragrance is delightful!

Thanks Rosie, Psyched.

Thanks for infos Cneos. But I'm still confused. I do have those plants as well (V. brunnea, deninosiana and tessellata).
But do you mean that Vanda tessellata (Roxb) Hook. 1850 and Vanda denisoniana var tessellata (Guillaumin 1933) are , in fact , the same plant ?
Because I checked and I can not find that V.denisoniana var tesselleta is a synonym of V.tessellata.

My understanding is that there is no such thing as V. denisoniana var. tesselata however, there is such a species as V. tessellata (syn. roxburghii).

Again, although flowers may look the same, these are two distinct species.
