Going to our side topic, V coerulea petals characteristically twist about 90 degrees on their basal axis, although the petals of some plants have less tendency to twist than others.
Of the 43 AOS awards, almost all flowers exhibit the twist to some degree.
The most recent FCC (95 points) to 'Thanks David' had only the slightest twist making it one of the flattest coerulea ever seen. According to the exhibitor, flatness was accomplished by line breeding with two superior parents, 'RX-12' and 'Lois Grove'. I had the pleasure attending that judging and being a student judge, of presenting the plant and writing the award description.
"Fifteen magnificent flowers and one bud elegantly arranged on a 70-cm, nearly horizontal inflorescence; sepals and petals chalk white, vividly tessellated intense coerulean blue; lip darker coerulean blue, faintly striped white; column and side lobes white; substance excellent; texture glistening; by far the finest V. coerulea the judges had encountered with flatness, fullness and intensity of color equivalent to any Vanda hybrid seen.
