Default Sarcochilus

I am trying my hand with a couple different varieties of Sarcochilus plants. Does anyone have any suggestions for someone just starting out with this type of orchid?

For starters, it might be better understood if you knew they belonged in the Vanda alliance.

They grow as epiphytes or lithophytes. Many people grow them as epiphytes. But Santa Barbara Orchid Estate grows them as lithophytes.

If you grow them as epiphytes you have the option of potting them or mounting them.

If potting use large grade fir bark.

When mounting do not cover the roots with moss. I don't even think putting moss underneath the roots is a good idea. For the most part they grow upright.

However, if you're growing as a lithophyte...The way Santa Barbara Orchid Estate does it is by potting them up using pieces of granite lightly put in there as media to anchor the roots down.

They like indirect bright light just like Cattleyas do.

Water about three times a week if potted. If mounted, water 4 to 5 times a week. When in doubt water less.

Luckily Sarcochilus are pretty hardy and are temperature tolerant.

They should put out some nice displays during the spring.

With the exception of some of the novelty breeding, most of the Sarc hybrids use a high proportion of hartmannii and fitzgeraldii in their parentage, which tends to impart vigour even when crossed with more temperamental species. Both of these species are also good beginner plants. If you start with the common white with red centre type hybrids you should be fine.
