That's certainly a beautifully bloomed plant. Congratulations !!!! It looks a lot like my Robert's Delight.

Very nice, Marilyn. I take it, being that you're only one state north of me, that you have a metal halide set-up in your basement? Do you vary the amount of light you give to your vandas over the course of the year? Do any of them go outdoors in the summer, or do you grow them under lights year round? Congratulations on your flowers. The color is stunning (and the quantity too!).

Yes, I grow my vandas in my basement under a 650W HID light. My growing area where I have my vandas is about 9 feet long, 48 inches wide, so I have it on a light mover. I leave my light on about 14 hours bacause it moves and I want to be sure they all get enough light.

When I said I wanted to do this I was told 'don't bother, you can grow foliage that way but they will NEVER bloom. Mine might not be the quality of one grown in a greenhouse or in Florida, but I'm happy with what they do.

I also have Phrags in that room under T5 lights. They grow like weeds, and always blooms for me. I love phrags, but the leaves get so long and a flower spike just keeps growing as the new flowers open. They take a LOT of space.

I leave my plants in my basement year round. I have difficulty walking, and walk with a cane.....and I'm not 50 any more, or 60, or even 75. They might do well outside but it is too difficult for me to carry them upstairs. I can move things up by moving them one step at a time. Going down is another story.

I hope I have answered all your questions. OOPS, one more thing, the trays under them (they hang) have drainage on one corner. I have 1" tubeing draining them into a large rain barrel, a hose from the bottom of the rain barrel runs into my shower stall. I found it was too much work to drain them into pails and then carry the pails to empty them.

I have a hodge podge set up but it works for me. Thats what is important.

Marilyn

Hello Marilyn,
thank you for some more info about how you grow your orchids. You certainly did a good job on growing this Vanda. It's beautiful!

What a lucky plant to have landed in your basement.
