i have what i think is a Sarcochilus hartmannii (there was no ID, but it has flowered) and the plant has a vandaceous appearance. would a vanda survive under similar conditions??
(i just read the wikipedia article of sarcochilus, which says they're endimic to australia.. so maybe my question is dumb..)

I would think not. It totally depends on your growing conditions. I have Sarcs and Vandas in the one house BUT the Vandas are hanging or on benches in high light and in the hottest end of the house. The Sarcs are on the floor under the bench in the coolest part of the house and in a lot of shade.
I also live in Melbourne, and have fallen in love with vandas. Mine appear to be growing happily in a north facing window, but are too young to flower as yet. I will be following this thread with interest!
