That could work you will need to keep a close watch on it as you could still get mold but if it is allowed to dry out a little between watering it shoud be ok.

Looks fine. Keep an eye on it. Let it dry out completely before watering again.

Word of caution, don't let water collect at the bottom of the vase at have the root sit in it. If water does collect at the bottom, dump it out.
