Stephen, you have done a terrific job growing this plant. It has that wonderful purple spotting that is seen only in a happy, well grown plant. My plant is usually green during the summer growing period and then it turns red during the winter before blooming. You can tell miniatum by the petals that are slightly transparent and slightly veined. Garayi is a little more orange.
Update: Mine has finally put out another spike (first one since 2006) and it is on the verge of blooming. Yipee! I think the increased water has done the trick as nothing else has changed. (Pics to come...)
Also, my Vascostylis Pine Rivers 'Redland Sky' has two spikes emerging, although they certainly are taking their sweet time about it. This will be a first on this one for me.

Reason: typo
I almost bought the Miniatum at the Jacksonville show recently but didn't. I think you might have lucked out as the miniatum is considerable lighter...I love your [I]bright orange[I] color.
WoW! Very nice! Can't wait to see a pic(s) of the spike blooming!
Your spike is definitely a 'heavy weight' - fat & healthy as Stephen said above. Congrats!
It's made me wonder if I should change the 'widow' mine is in (it is facing W or put it with my cats facing S) As it has much darker leaves...
(it did bloom twice last year..)
How many flowers on a spike is the norm?
