Hey Jenn yeah that compot is they key to their survival rate. Leaving them in the bottle as long as possible is vital too.Im sure you'll get your chance again and you'll do great.
Jackie maybe he is out right now but I don't see why you wouldn't be able to get them from him. Also try calling him and talking live to either him or his wife.

Good thread, very interesting!! I've never tried deflasking orchids for my own personal use...I did deflask a bunch back in college as a hort student, but those were for the orchid club, and who knows what's become of them It is cool to get a huge flask of babies...I'm just too impatient to wait for them, aren't I terrible?

I called Ruben today, left a message. Went on Ebay this morning after Swamper mentioned, and there are NO Vanda Flask right now. I sent him an email too.
I buy from him all the time. I have 3 flask that I bought this weekend from him, on the way today. Just wish he had Vanda's, as I've Never seen them on his Ebay site

Great thread. Thanks for the show AND tell. I'd love to try this but am afraid I don't have room at the moment to grow that many chids to blooming size. The flasks and the compot I could do, but once they got bigger....

Becky, you were a very lucky horticulture student. I'm currently studying horticulture, but my college doesn't have an orchid club. We do have a horticulture club, but my college is focused more on agriculture since it's surrounded by endless fields tended by wheat farmers and others. At least I could work with orchids as a project.

The only problem with buying plants in flasks or compots is that you have to wait so long for flowers. The bonus is that you get to see all the variation in a hybrid cross.

Wow cool pictures.

How long for Vanda to flower from flask? I asked a local nursery and they said Vanda will bloom in about 5 years if grown from flask. ;____; how discouraging....

I guess that's why Vanda flower size cost quite a bit.

Peewee I used physan 20 when I got home. Hard to say at what concentration, a couple of drops in a small sprayer bottle, it felt right.

Jackie, when you speak to Ruben ask him if he has any of those Bob Hatos vanda hybrids around for sale. Tell him you're a friend of a friend. Maybe he has some left. Good luck. BTW I didn't know about him on Ebay but thanks to you and Royal now I do
Ronald and Psyched....Five years from the time you flask them to flower, that is about right, I have 3 years to go from this point. I would go crazy waiting if I didn't have a couple of other plants around to keep me busy in the meantime. There are definately pros and cons... I do have a parent and a (brother) blooming right now so that helps
