David - I just have to add my alcolades to your award winning vanda. It is simply one of my favorites you have shown us over time. The deep color is magic. When are you going to increase the "family" and perhaps putting a few up for adoption? lol. Really, a sincere congratulations to you! Don

Congrats -- that's a fascinating color for a Vanda. I like the name too, 'cause I'm a fan of "Pirates of the Caribbean" with the Black Pearl ship.

That's amazing!!!! Congrats! It's really a lovely specimen. So did you breed it yourself? I'm a little confused how the AM/AOS bit works.

Hi Ema,

Thanks for your comments.

I did not breed this myself. The AM/AOS is an award designation that is tagged to the end of the plant name once it receives an award. In the case, it is an Award of Merit from the American Orchid Society. The 'David's Black Pearl' part of the name is the clonal name I gave this particular plant to distinguish it from other V. Erika Cizek Dann plants.

I hope this helps clear things up a bit.

Ah! Most definitely! Being fairly new to orchids (a couple of years), it can be difficult to find information on things such as this that are common jargon for those who've been doing this for much longer! haha

It's like when I find myself trying to explain molecular biology and genetics to my boyfriend who's in sociology. Hehe
